Seven facts you might not know about George Edward Stanhope Molyneux Herbert, 

Lord Carnarvon of Tutankhamun Fame

 

·    George was born in  London at the Carnarvon home of 66 Grosvenor Street, in 1866.  Almost all biographies say he was born at Highclere Castle.

 

·     George was not the first-born son of the Fourth Earl and Countess of Carnarvon. His elder brother was still born in 1862.

 

·     George went to preparatory school at Brighton, attended Eton College and later attempted entry into both Oxford and Cambridge Universities.

 

·     George was a pupil at Jimmies, the famous crammer in London’s Cromwell Road, at the same time at Winston Churchill.

 

·     George spoke fluent French and German.

 

·     His father, the Fourth Earl of Carnarvon, refused George his “coming of age” celebrations in 1887.

 

·     George was an accomplished conjuror and played the banjo.
